The Estonian National Museum (ENM) was founded in Tartu in 1909. The ENM’s new building, designed by the Paris-based architecture firm DGT Architects, opened in October 2016.

The museum has 6000 square metres of exhibition space. Most of this space is dedicated to the permanent exhibition Encounters, which expands on Estonian cultural history and everyday life and spans a timeline from the present day to the Ice Age.

The second-largest permanent exhibition is Echo of the Urals, which provides insight into the lives of people who speak Finno-Ugric languages and inhabit the northern parts of this corner of the world. The exhibition takes visitors through four seasons, introducing people related to Estonians.
